Late Summer 2002

COME WITH US TO CORNWALL
Sunday September 1st is a critical date in the club calendar.  The South West League match is at the Carn Brea Leisure Centre Redruth on that date and we are going to have to fight for our lives to stay in Division 1.  WE NEED YOU THERE.  We are particularly keen to strengthen the under 13 age groups where we have rarely been able to turn out a relay squad.  Qualified officials and distance runners have also been in short supply. If we fill all the events we have the talent to stay in Division 1.  The coach will leave the Damory depot in Blandford at 0600 and will pick up at Q E at 0630.

If you need help with transport at this early hour please contact me and we will see what we can arrange.

CLUB BARBECUE
By kind permission of the Holdens you are invited to a  MYSTERY WALK and CLUB BARBECUE at Warriors Keep, Keepers Lane, Stapehill, Near Wimborne

§         Thursday August 22nd starting at 7.00pm.

§         Please bring your choice of meat for barbecueing.  A separate grill will be operating for your veggie alternative.

§         Please also bring your own drink and something to sit on.

§         The heated swimming pool will be available even if it rains.

§         Please bring a donation to club funds. There will also be a RAFFLE

Parking is very limited which is why we advertise this as a mystery walk.  It is better to park at the end of Award Road and walk along Keepers Lane.  Please park in a position that does not annoy local residents. You may need a torch for the journey back.  If you need further directions please contact Peter on 01202 880767

Please tell Peter if you are coming.

ENGLISH SCHOOLS
Some fantastic performances at the English Schools in July at Nottingham.  Louise Watton’s UK and Championship record of 46m90 was a real joy to watch even if it was on “the outside court” at Mansfield.  Louise can now count Mick Hill as one of her fans.  UK Javelin star Mick was very impressed by Louise’s skill and motivation and was keen to discover the secret of her success.  Dan Smith also secured a bronze medal in the high jump as did Jocelyn Hird in the pole vault.  Nick Fradgley and Rachel Cork were only just out of contention for the medals.

JUNIOR MATCH
On Wednesday August 21st there will be a match for under 13s and Under 11s at Ashdown starting at 6.00pm. The match includes a sprint, middle distance, long jump, high jump, shot and either javelin or cricket ball.  If you would like to compete please talk to Steve Henderson 01202 881635

COUNTY 10K and WOMENS 2K STEEPLECHASE takes place on the same evening.

And then comes Cross Country
At a meeting on 1st August it was decided that we would continue to run Cross Country.  Ian Kennedy 01202 577081 has offered to act as secretary because of his contacts with the road runners.  He needs help and support from someone who will encourage junior members of the club to take part.  The Wessex League has monthly fixtures and there are a number of other championship opportunities.  Anyone who is able to help please contact any member of the committee.

CHILD PROTECTION
Any self-respecting club these days needs a Child Protection officer.  Fortunately there have been few if any problems in athletics by comparison with swimming and gymnastics.  Fran Marsh is the Club’s Child Protection Officer - she can be reached on 01202 888441

ROAD RUNNERS
The squad produces its own newsletter with full details of events and activities.  Contact Jerry Shield 01202 881085 for details.  Forthcoming road races include:

26th August                Shillingstone Hill 5

26th August                Cranborne 10

31st August                 Enduroman Chesil Run

1st Sept                       The Beast

8th Sept                      Great South Run

15th Sept                    Littledown 5

22nd Sept                  New Forest Marathon and Half Marathon

SOUTHERN MENS LEAGUE
If they have pulled it off it will be one of the greatest escapes since Houdini.  In desperate points trouble the fellas came back to win match 5 at Worthing.  The last match, a trip to Battersea gave us 2 points to give a series total of 13 and 20th place in a 25 team division with five teams being relegated.  Windsor Slough and Eton tied for third place in their last match to give them 12.5 points.  Another half a match point more would give them the safety place because they had scored more individual points.  Expect their team manager to be going through the last result with a fine tooth comb.
